congrats on your engagement

Congratulations on your recent engagement! We’re so excited for you and all the joy you’re experiencing!

Planning your wedding requires a lot of effort – so many options are available! But don’t worry; you are not alone. The wedding professionals at The Historic Post Office are here to help.

Here are a few ideas to help get you started.

Start Planning Your Dream Wedding

start planning your dream wedding

Before you decide on anything, envision your dream wedding. Carry a wedding inspiration journal with you, or use a mobile note-taking app like Evernote, OneNote, or Google Keep. You can also use the planning tools on wedding websites like The Knot or Wedding Wire.

  • Do you want a big wedding or an intimate gathering?
  • Will your wedding be outside in the fall? Inside in the spring?
  • Roses everywhere or candles?
  • Seven bridesmaids or just two?

Think about who you are now and what is significant in this season of your life.

  • What would you regret if you didn’t have it?
  • What is the special treat, accessory, or idea you must include?
  • What are the dreams of your significant other?
  • Who are the most important people you want to participate?

Writing down these thoughts will help keep the clutter out of your head and contained in one location so that you can decide how you want to celebrate.

After you’ve captured these ideas, it’s time to start planning!

Do Your Research

The very first place to begin is: the budget!

It may not seem glamorous or exciting but, considering the average wedding in 2017 was more than $25,000 (according to www.costofwedding.com), it’s easy to see wedding costs can quickly spiral out of control. Determining what you can spend before you make a phone call or click on a website will help you feel confident about the decisions you make moving forward.

Once you know your budget, start assessing the costs and availability of your preferred vendors.

It’s always a good idea to pick your top two or three options. You want the best price, but you also want to ensure your chosen vendor provides what you need with excellence, so be sure to ask lots of questions.

Another idea when doing your research: talk to your friends! Talk to those who have recently gotten married or scheduled an event. Find out what they learned:

  • What would they do again?
  • What was essential?
  • What was completely unnecessary?

These personal insights can help you shape your vision and may make seemingly difficult decisions much easier.

Now that you’ve done your research, it’s time to make two key decisions:

  • Choosing a date.
  • Choosing a venue.

Choose a Date

Once you have the engagement ring on your finger, the first question you’ll be asked (after, “Tell me about the proposal!”) is, “Have you picked a date?”

When selecting a date, consider:

  • What will the season be like?
  • Are there any holidays, graduations, or other events which could affect guest attendance?

In addition to a primary date, have at least two backup dates in mind because your chosen venue will probably be solidly booked through the next year. So, the sooner you start – the better. Having a few dates in mind will relieve stress because you’ll be prepared with other options.

Choose a Wedding Venue

It’s time to choose your venue! Venues come in all shapes and sizes and with varying amenities. When you talk to each venue, ask lots of questions.

  • Will our event be the only one that day?
  • Where will the wedding party get ready?
  • Is a Wedding Coordinator included?
  • Can you hold the ceremony and the reception in your location?
  • Can you bring my wedding vision to life?

Questions like these will help you find the best location for your special day.

The Historic Post Office in quaint Ottawa, Kansas, offers all these amenities and so many more. Your wedding will be the only event in our venue on your day, so you can prepare and relax before the ceremony in our luxurious Bride and Groom Suites without feeling a time constraint.

Our helpful staff, including an event coordinator and a day of personal attendant, will coordinate with your chosen vendors to create a seamless experience. They can also flip the ceremony space to create a beautiful reception. Whether your dream is an intimate celebration or a lavish wedding for up to 300 guests, we can turn your vision into reality.
